Rattan is one of those materials that feels like it’s been kissed by the sun and shaped by time. It’s strong, flexible, and full of character—woven into chairs, baskets, and lamps that bring warmth to any space. But like all natural fibres, rattan thrives with a little care.

Whether your rattan lives indoors or out, here’s how to keep it looking gorgeous year after year.

1. Dust Gently, Often

Rattan’s intricate weave creates tiny nooks where dust loves to hide. Use a microfiber cloth or a vacuum with a brush attachment to gently clean the surface, making sure to reach into the crevices. A light dusting twice a week keeps everything fresh and breathable.

2. Clean With Bubbles, Not Soaks

When grime or mildew appears, mix warm water with a few drops of dish soap until bubbles form. Dip a soft cloth or toothbrush into the bubbles (not the water!) and lightly scrub the surface. Rattan doesn’t like to be soaked—so always pat it dry with a clean towel right after.

3. Cover It When Weather Strikes

If your rattan furniture lives outdoors, it deserves a little protection. Use a polyester cover that’s both waterproof and breathable, especially during winter or rainy seasons.

4. Wipe Spills Immediately

Rattan is absorbent and can warp if left wet. If something spills, blot it up quickly with a soft cloth—no rubbing, no soaking.

5. Rotate to Prevent Sun Damage

Sunlight is lovely—but too much can fade and dry out rattan. Rotate your furniture every few weeks so each side gets equal exposure. If placing rattan near windows, consider sheer curtains or blinds to soften the light.

Rattan That Lasts

With just a little care and consideration, rattan can last 20+ years indoors. It’s one of those materials that rewards you for paying attention—aging gracefully, gathering stories, and becoming part of your home’s memory.

“Rattan is like a good friendship—it lasts when you treat it with care.”

Final Thoughts

Caring for rattan isn’t complicated. It’s a quiet ritual, a way of honoring the hands that made it and the nature that shaped it. So dust gently, clean thoughtfully, and let your woven treasures shine.
